The image pavilion of the sugar mill and the shacks

Before the establishment of the Museum of Archaeology, the sugar industry has been part of the local culture landscape for centuries, making sugarcane one of the most important local crops. In addition, besides restoring the sugarcane farming view outdoor, the sugar millstone used in the Ching dynasty is replicated for visitors to experience how sugar was made in those days. Cattle used to be the power source pulling the millstones to squeeze cane juice for making sugar in early “sugar mills”. The four consecutive ranges unearthed from the south of Daoye Site in the STSP are the first archaeological finding in the historical Taiwan. In addition, wooden parts including the sugar filter, filter pot, flint, sugarcane millstone, and cane clapping saddle are also important artifacts of Taiwan’s traditional sugar-making technology.
